Photography on Trial: Citizen Journalism in the Dock

Thursday 13 October 2011, 6pm to 8pm

Redeye and Impressions Gallery are delighted to present the second in the series of Photography on Trial events in the splendid surroundings of the Victorian Courtroom at City Hall, as part of Ways of Looking.

Speakers Andrew Wiard (Professional Photojournalist) and Turi Munthe (CEO of citizen journalism photo agency Demotix) cross examine citizen journalism, chaired by resident 'Judge' Paul Herrmann, Director of Redeye. This is your chance to hear experts in the field get to the heart of the important and complex issues around citizen journalism.

We'll be discussing:

- Does citizen photojournalism disrupt the market, in particular the distribution and use of professional photojournalism, and does anything get lost in the process?

- Do citizen journalists put themselves in dangerous positions? Are they exploited?

- What do professionals bring in terms of experience, reliability, and 'neutrality'?

- What has the broader range of materials, voices, and positions available through citizen journalism brought to the nature and quality of news reporting?

As a twist, at the end of the 'trial', we'll be asking you - the jury - to vote on the key issue that has arisen from the debate, so you'll need to stay alert and keep an open mind.

Places are limited in the courtroom so we advise you to book your place in advance.
