Symposium: Behind the Scenes at a Photography Gallery

Friday 14 October 2016, 1.00pm to 4.00pm


How do photographers work with galleries? Presented in partnership with Bradford School of Art at Bradford College, this symposium is hosted alongside the Impressions touring exhibition Lost Languages and other voices at The Dye House Gallery.

An afternoon of talks by artists and curators offering a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes at a gallery. Expect insights into the curator - artist relationship and collaborative working in different spaces at this not-to-be-missed event for students, lecturers and photography enthusiasts. A great opportunity to find out more for photographers taking their first steps towards exhibiting in a gallery.

Welcome: Pam Brook, Head of School, Bradford School of Art
Introducing Joy Gregory: Anne McNeill Director of Impressions Gallery

1.45pm 
The Artist's Perspective: Joy Gregory
Drawing on her long career and many exhibitions in galleries both national and international, Joy shares her experiences and discusses some of the artworks exhibited in Lost Languages and other voices.

Working with Galleries and Curators: Anne McNeill, Director and Pippa Oldfield, Head of Programme, Impressions Gallery
With many years curating photography exhibitions and working with artists, Anne and Pippa aim to demystify the photographer-curator relationship, and offer insider's tips on how photographers can work with public-funded galleries.

3.30pm 
Plenary: Artist Liza Dracup, currently exhibiting at The Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate, joins the speakers for a round-table discussion of issues raised, with plenty of time for your questions.

4.00pm 
Symposium ends

Delegates are invited to stay for the exhibition launch of Lost Languages and other voices which commences at 4.30pm and will be opened by Bradford College Provost, Richard Thomas and the Director of Impressions Gallery, Anne McNeill.
