Impressions Gallery

New Studio exhibition: Northern Stars opens 11 May

Sat, 11th May, 2013

Impressions Gallery is delighted to present Northern Stars, an exhibition of work by six photographers fresh from the inaugural Photography for Digital Media BA (Hons) programme at the University of Bradford. Over the course of three years, the students have developed the technical and conceptual skills needed to communicate ideas via photography, making a diverse range of images that can capture, intrigue, and move viewers.

Kevin Miller examines the culture of protests in the UK, revealing that despite digital media, hand-made banners remain a powerful means of political expression. Charlotte Metcalfe draws inspiration from the 1944 film Double Indemnity (1944) to create images that evoke the dark and mysterious world of cinema’s Film Noir. Vela Sidile powerfully redefines the representation of black women with a series of portraits of women of all ages, celebrating beauty and difference. Aylya Solakova, born and raised in Bulgaria, reveals her country through images of nature and everyday details, made during her wanderings in the countryside from summer to winter.  Alan Carmichael creates layered and three dimensional photographic constructions that draw on sources from cinema, theatre, and graphic novels. Hayley Sargent explores five cities in Northern England (Bradford, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle and Birmingham) to reveal the effects of deindustrialisation on their environments and people.

Charlie Meecham, Programme Leader, said, ‘We are delighted to collaborate with Impressions and look forward to a growing and long standing relationship between the Gallery and Bradford University’. Anne McNeill, Director of Impressions Gallery said, ‘Since giving internationally renowned photographer Martin Parr his very first exhibition in 1972, Impressions Gallery has been strongly committed to supporting new work by emerging photographers, and we are excited to present a generation of new talent nurtured in Bradford’.

Join us for the offical launch and drinks reception on Saturday 11 May 3pm to 5pm.

The exhibition runs from 11 May to 1 June in the Studio. Please note the Studio is sometimes closed for our education events, so call ahead before making a special journey.
