Impressions on tour: Juan Pablo Echeverri at MIMA

Sat, 29th Jun, 2013

Don’t miss the chance to see Miss fotojapón by Colombian artist Juan Pablo Echeverri as it tours to MIMA, Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art.

Juan Pablo will be exhibiting as part of the ¡VAMOS! festival, a celebration of Spanish and Portuguese speaking cultures in the North East, from 4 July to 19 September 2013. There will be an opening celebration at MIMA on Wednesday 3 July from 6pm to 8pm.

First shown at Impressions in 2007 as part of the exhibition Once More, with Feeling and now part of the Impressions Gallery Archive, Miss Fotojapón consists of almost 3000 photobooth photographs made between 1998 and 2007. To create the work, Juan Pablo made a daily trip to the FotoJapón photography store in Bogotá, Colombia to have his passport photo taken. In each image, the artist went to great lengths to style his hair and clothing differently, taking on an almost chameleon like quality so that it takes the viewer time to realise that each image is in fact the same person.

As part of ¡VAMOS!, Impressions’ Head of Programme and co-curator of Once More, With Feeling, Pippa Oldfield will be talking about Miss Fotojapón and other photographic self-portrait projects from Latin America at Newcastle University on 11 July at 12.30pm.

The exhibition and related events are free, please visit the MIMA and ¡VAMOS! festival websites for more details.
