Impressions on tour: Anna Fox at The Lowry, Manchester

Sat, 19th Oct, 2013

Iconic work from Anna Fox’s major 2008 retrospective at Impressions Gallery will be on display at The Lowry, Manchester, as part of a group exhibition featuring work selected by Grammy nominated musician and fashion icon Alison Goldfrapp.

The exhibition, the first in the Performer as Curator series, includes mixed media artworks selected from collections around the world, offering a rare opportunity to explore some of Goldfrapp’s personal inspirations through the painters, film makers, illustrators and photographers who have shaped her own artistic vision.

The image loaned by Impressions is from the series Country Girls, a collaboration between Fox and Goldfrapp inspired by shared experiences of growing up as young women in ‘suffocating’ rural southern England in the 1970s. Anna Fox describes the process, ‘Alison brought clothes and make up. We went out into the landscape, often at night or in the early morning, and made photographs that summed up these feelings.’ The image selected for the exhibition features the musician collapsed amongst bluebells, and sums up Goldfrapp’s love of ambiguity, it could be a murder scene, or as she recently commented, 'someone just having a lovely romp in the flowers’.

The exhibition runs from 19 October 2013 to 2 March 2014 and includes over 20 artists from national and international collections including: John Stezaker, Jan Pienkowski, Lotte Reiniger, Simon English,  Leonora Carrington, and Henry Darger.
