Impressions launches public artwork created by young people

Wed, 8th Jul, 2015

Revealed is a unique public artwork created by young people from Bradford schools. It marks the culmination of Impressions Gallery’s second year-long education programme Start, funded by Children and the Arts.

Throughout the year over 200 students aged 11 to 16 from Grange Technology College and Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College have taken part in a series of inspiring gallery visits and workshops. The workshops have been led by Impressions Gallery and Bradford based multi-media artist Shanaz Gulzar. As part of the programme, each student has created a digital montage or collage self-portrait exploring their developing identities, hopes and aspirations.

Revealed is a series of 8 double sided large-scale panels of the students faces exhibited in Impressions Gallery's building. The panels are displayed as a maze inviting the audience to explore the artwork and make new discoveries about Bradford young people in their own voice.

Sandra Hirst, Teacher of Art at Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College said, ‘The Start project has been a valuable experience for our students. It has enabled them to access photographic images they would not normally see. They enjoyed the practical workshops and as a teacher I felt the students were inspired by what they saw’.

Anne McNeill, Director of Impressions Gallery said, 'We are delighted to be able to work with Grange Technology College, and Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College to provide a transformational art experience for children and young people in Bradford. Start enhances our existing high quality education programme and highlights our commitment to developing deeper and more meaningful relationships with schools in Bradford.'

'Great Exhibit - showing young people's view on the world in a really creative and visually exciting way'

Revealed is on view until 31 August 2015
