Impressions is one of 50+ venues in the UK showing a temporary exhibition of photographs to support the campaign to free Shahidul Alam.

Shahidul Alam is an internationally recognised award-winning photographer and human rights activist. Shahidul founded some of the most influential photography organisations in Asia, including Drik Multimedia Agency, Pathsala School of Photography and Chobi Mela International Photography Festival.

On 6 August, Shahidul was charged and imprisoned under Section 57 of Bangladesh’s Information and Communication Technology Act after giving an interview to Al-Jazeera on the current wave of student protests in Bangladesh. Section 57 of the ICT Act carries a minimum sentence of 7 years and a maximum of 14 years in jail.

Amnesty International considers Shahidul Alam a prisoner of conscience, detained for nothing but the legitimate use of his freedom of expression, and is therefore calling for his immediate and unconditional release.

Part of a UK-wide project initiated by Northern centre of Photography, University of Sunderland, Autograph, London and Drik Picture Agency, Bangladesh.

Display continues until 28 October 2018.
