Dana Popa wins international photography award

Thu, 1st Apr, 2010

Impressions Gallery is delighted to announce that photographer Dana Popa has been awarded first prize in the world renowned Center Project Competition 2010.

She was awarded for her hard-hitting series not Natasha, which is showing at Impressions Gallery until 18 April 2010. Popa was selected from several hundreds of entries to win the 15th annual Project Competition, which honours committed photographers working on documentary projects and fine-art series.

Center is a nonprofit organisation based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which supports, promotes and provides opportunity to gifted and committed photographers.

Three jurors reached a consensus on the First Prize, Tina Kukielski, Senior Curatorial Assistant, Whitney Museum of American Art; Markus Seewald, Photo Editor, GEO magazine, and Nion McEvoy, CEO, Chronicle Books.

Juror Markus Seewald, Photo Editor of GEO magazine said ‘Within two days we reviewed 671 entries; stories that strike me most have a coherent concept, a clear focus, strong images, and a personal approach. Dana Popa's winning work “Not Natasha” is a very personal view of young women who have been forced into prostitution and who have no rights. While this phenomenon is not new, Dana had the ability to tell their stories with much empathy.’

The exhibition not Natasha continues at Impressions Gallery until 18 April 2010, click here to read more.
