1mile² Bradford: Iranian artist-in-residence announced

Mon, 25th Oct, 2010

Iranian artist Gohar Dashti, who currently lives in Tehran, will be international artist-in-residence in Bradford as part of Visiting Arts’ ambitious 1mile2 (“one square mile) project.

Gohar Dashti is an artist exploring social issues in Iran, often through photographic self-portraits and she will spend a month based at Impressions Gallery meeting and working with local people from 10 November to 10 December 2010.

1mile² is an innovative international programme that connects communities in Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Pakistan, South Africa and the UK, by inviting them to take part in events and artistic activities that examine the culture and environment of their city. Bradford is one of the first UK cities to take part in the programme. Local people will spend a month with Gohar and Bradford-based ecologist Charlie Gray, exploring the square mile encompassing the neighbourhoods of Little Horton and Great Horton and producing creative work in response.

Impressions will be holding an Open Day in the Studio on 28 October from 11.30am to 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome to pop in and meet the 1mile² Bradford team to find out more about the project and how they can take part. To find out more, please call 01274 737843.

1mile² Bradford is supported by DCMS and led by City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council in partnership with Impressions Gallery and Visiting Arts and is part of the worldwide celebrations of 2010 as International Year of Biodiversity. Other partners include Bradford University’s Ecoversity, Bradford College and the National Media Museum.
