Drop in to our Open Day on Thursday 28 October 2010 from 11.30am to 2.00pm to find out more about a range of workshops and activities that are taking place as part of the impressive 1mile² "one square mile" project.
The project connects international communities in Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and the UK, by inviting local people to take part in events and workshops that explore the many cultures and different environments that make up their city. Bradford is one of only three cities in the UK to be selected. During November 2010, we will be working with Iranian photographer Gohar Dashti and ecologist Charlie Gray on an amazing project which invites people to explore the areas of Little and Great Horton in Bradford.
Working together in groups, you will be taken on three journeys, each exploring different themes within the Square Mile. Using your camera, you will capture the different cultures, buildings, plants and people that make up this diverse and colourful area.
6 November 2010
Ecologist Charlie Gray will take you on a journey to investigate the weird and wonderful plants and herbs you can find in the Square Mile. Following the a route which will be marked on your map, you will explore the area while using your camera to document your findings - with a little help from the learning staff at Impressions Gallery.
13 November 2010
Artist Gohar Dashti will work with you to capture the different cultures from within the Square Mile. Responding to Gohar’s work and her impressions of the area, you will explore the different environments and people who live and work in the Square Mile and show how rich and diverse the area is by focusing on culture, heritage and language.
20 November 2010
After spending time with local historian Nafees Nazir discussing the history and unique cultural heritage of Great Horton, you will get the chance to create your own responses to the area by visiting 3 places of worship including the Polish Catholic Church, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Jamia Masjid to photograph these wonderful and interesting buildings and the surrounding areas.
If you and your family or group are interested in taking part and can attend all three workshops, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call Sarah Deane on 01274 737843. The workshops are available to people of all ages and abilities with groups or families encouraged to book places – places are limited so pre-booking is essential.
Find out more about the workshops at our Open Day in the Studio at Impressions on the 28 October 2010 from 11.30am to 2.00pm where you can pop in and meet the 1mile² Square Mile team and talk about the project.
1mile² Bradford is supported by DCMS and led by City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council in partnership with Impressions Gallery and Visiting Arts and is part of the worldwide celebrations of 2010 as International Year of Biodiversity.
