Ways of Looking: Volunteer Opportunities

Ways of Looking is a new photography festival in Bradford and we are currently looking for a team of committed volunteers to help with the smooth running of the festival during October 2011.

Exploring the theme of EVIDENCE the festival will offer new exhibitions alongside specifically commissioned works, photography in public spaces, collaborations with Bradford city residents an interactive Digital game. Featured artists include internationally renowned Magnum photographer Donovan Wylie, and Turner Prize winners Douglas Gordon and Jeremy Deller plus Red Saunders, Daniel Meadows, Bradford Grid and many more.

Festival Volunteer – summary of role
Ways of Looking volunteers will support and facilitate events and activities taking place throughout the festival, working with permanent staff across galleries and venues in Bradford. You will be working face to face with the public offering information and helpful guidance to festival visitors.

Tasks you can expect to assist with – (tasks are indicative, you may not be involved in every task on this list)
•    Welcoming Ways of Looking festival visitors and offering event information and festival brochures to the public
•    Invigilating exhibitions
•    Guiding visitors to events across the city centre.
•    Assisting with festival events openings / talks / workshops etc, including set up and clearing of events
•    Collecting data, questionnaires and feedback for evaluation purposes
•    Assisting with general administration and organisation
•    Assisting with the installation and de-install of festival exhibitions and projects

Person Specification
We are looking for people who are:
•    Available to work at least one day during the opening weekend of the festival (Launch weekend runs all day Friday 30 September, Saturday 1 October and Sunday 2 October)
•    Able to commit to work 2 days a week for a minimum of 2 weeks
•    Friendly and confident with excellent communication skills
•    Interested in photography, art or visual culture.
•    Punctual and reliable
•    Over 16 years of age

We are also very interested in hearing from people who are able to commit to more than 2 days a week and / or are available to volunteer for the whole month. It’s also an advantage if you are familiar with Bradford city centre.

Why volunteer?
Volunteering as part of Ways of Looking will give you valuable experience of working with professional arts organisations across many locations, as part of a nationally important photography festival. You will receive disability awareness training, plus a branded festival hooded jumper and a copy of the festival publication. We can reimburse travel expenses up to the cost of £4 per day on provision of receipts.
