Tim Smith creates films for The Space

Wed, 3rd Oct, 2012

Four films by Tim Smith commissioned by the Arts Council for The Space, the BBC’s new experimental digital arts channel, can now be viewed on-line. The films combine archive footage from the BBC and newly commissioned interviews with portraits taken at Bradford’s Belle Vue Studio and stills drawn from Smith's own archive shot over the past 25 years.

Smith was inspired to revisit these photographs after visiting Jeremy Deller’s show Poking About, part of Bradford’s 2011 Ways Of Looking photography festival, which drew extensively on the Belle Vue portraits and Tim’s pictures of Bradford’s Asian communities shot during the 1980s.

Work by Tim Smith is currently being shown in our exhibition Roads to Wigan Pier.
