Inspired by Helen Sear’s exhibition, Prospect Refuge Hazard, join us a for an insight into ‘prospect-refuge’ theory, introduced by artist Simon Warner.

Prospect-refuge theory was created by Yorkshire-born geographer Jay Appleton (1919 - 2015). His influential ideas help explain our deep-seated responses to the dangers of the natural environment, and why we find certain environments ‘beautiful’.

Simon Warner, who has exhibited with Professor Appleton, will discuss prospect-refuge theory in connection with his own landscape photography including Bull Greave Beck, his six metre tall artwork currently on display in Impressions big window.
