Intergenerational digital project
A digital project sharing intergenerational and cross-cultural stories from New Focus and Bradford College students.
New Focus, Impressions Gallery’s young people’s collective, have developed an exciting digital project in collaboration with Bradford College. Forget-me-not shares intergenerational stories, with young people exploring how the lives of their ancestors have shaped who they are today.
Forget-me-not is inspired by Impressions Gallery’s current exhibition Nalini by Arpita Shah. In Nalini, Arpita Shah explores the connected histories of her mother, her grandmother and herself. Through photography and objects from her family archive, Shah reconnects with the past and explores how migration, distance and loss has shaped her heritage.
Working with photography students from Bradford College, New Focus have received mentoring to create studio portraits, as well as photographing heirloom objects central to their family histories. Featuring a wedding sari, a Yorkshire flat cap and a passport belonging to a Russian war veteran, the collected objects tell cross-cultural stories, shedding light on the diverse histories of young people in Bradford today.
Following a series of photoshoots and film editing sessions, the resulting short film, available to view online from Friday 20 March at 4.30pm, brings together stories from New Focus members and Bradford College students.
Please note: This project was originally due to launch in the gallery on Friday 20 March. In light of government advice for people to avoid non-essential contact, we will instead be launching the project online with a live Q&A with New Focus members on Twitter from 4.30pm.
