Girl Power: A Film by New Focus
A powerful short film celebrating the voices of three young girls in Bradford.
Girl Power is a specially commissioned project developed by New Focus, our young people’s collective. New Focus member Kanwal takes us around the Bradford district to discover the hopes, fears and aspirations of Alice, Amaira and Kiara.
Girl Power has been inspired by Impressions’ exhibition Being Inbetween by Carolyn Mendelsohn, a series of powerful photographic portraits of girls aged between ten and twelve. The film takes us behind the scenes to meet three of the girls who had their portraits taken and hear their powerful personal stories.
Alice shares her insights as a thirteen year old girl with a disability, and tells us how she wants to help other young disabled people feel they are not alone. Amaira shares her passion for equality, and confides how she has always wanted to be a fairy to escape from the stories in the news. Eleven year old Kiara expresses her fears for the environment and makes us imagine what the world will be like when she is an adult.
New Focus member Kanwal says, “Girl Power gives these courageous Bradford girls the chance to share their story, and we hope the film will inspire other young people to help shape their future in positive ways”.
Anne McNeill, director of Impressions Gallery and curator of Being Inbetween, says “We have been blown away by these articulate and inspiring girls. If they are ‘permitted’ to be who they are and what they want to be, then society and humanity will be safe in their hands.”
Girl Power is funded by Bradford Council, Bradford UNESCO City of Film and Bradford 2025 as part of their Make Film programme, and supported by Arts Council England.
