In conversation: Syd Shelton and Carol Tulloch — Impressions Gallery

Special event – not to be missed!

Photographer Syd Shelton and Professor Carol Tulloch will be in conversation on Saturday 16 November, 12.30pm to 1.30pm, discussing the vital role photography played in the Rock Against Racism movement, 1976 to 1981.

Rock Against Racism (1976 to 1981) was a ground-breaking movement formed by musicians and political activists to fight racism through music. Syd Shelton’s images captured a pivotal moment in British politics and culture, fashion and music.

A selection of Syd Shelton’s RAR images feature in our current Café Royal Books exhibition, and serve as a timely reminder that, sadly, we still need to confront racist ideology.

Syd and Carol will consider how the invitation from Craig Atkinson to be featured in his Café Royal series impacted on how Syd views his work, his engagement with his photography archive within that context, and what impact the Café Royal experience has had on his recent retrospective publication Stills From Life.

In 2016 Impressions Gallery showed Syd Shelton: Rock Against Racism, an Autograph touring exhibition co-curated by Mark Sealy and Carol Tulloch.

Stills from Life by Syd Shelton

Stills from Life opens with Syd Shelton’s dream of hope that the struggle and the fight for racial and class justice will prevail and it is the driving force dominating the last fifty years of his subjective photographic practice. From that time, he has never been anywhere without his camera bag in pursuit of what he calls the graphic argument.
