Open Out: Stand with the People of Ukraine

Large-scale photographs by Christopher Nunn offer a glimpse of everyday life in the Donbas region, Ukraine.

Location:

Bradford Road, Shipley, BD18 3DE

Our new outdoor exhibition Open Out: Stand with the People of Ukraine has been installed on three prominent billboards in Bradford.

The billboards, featuring large-scale photographs by documentary photographer Christopher Nunn, offer us a rare glimpse into the everyday life of people in the Donbas region, close to the border of Russia. Taken between 2015 and 2018, Nunn’s photographs capture quiet moments, overlooked and often joyous details. We see an elderly woman taking her cat for a walk in the snow, soldiers relaxing by an overgrown riverside, and the last day at school where students often gift flowers to their teachers.

The three individual photographs have been selected from the exhibition Borderland: Stories from Donbaswhich premiered in the UK at Impressions Gallery in October 2019.

On view for four weeks only, this is a rare chance to view these photographs at an impactful scale. As such Impressions Gallery hopes to draw attention to its campaign to raise funds for the people of Ukraine through the sale of newspaper Borderland: Stories from Donbas available from the gallery shop and on our website.

100% of the money raised is being donated to Nunn’s suggested charity Médecins Sans Frontières. Alternatively we are asking people to make a donation directly to the charity of their choice to help alleviate the pain of the war and support the people of Ukraine.

The billboards are on view at Bradford Road, Shipley, BD18 3DE until 12 April 2022.

Thanks to ArtFund for supporting Open Out through their ‘Respond and Reimagine’ funding, which has allowed us to respond to the new challenges presented by Covid-19.
