Start Education Programme
A three year education programme working with 400 young people across three Bradford schools.
In 2013, Impressions was one of eight arts venues in the UK to be awarded funding by HRH The Prince of Wales’ charity, The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts (Children & the Arts), to participate in its Start programme.
Start was a three year project engaging 400 young people aged 11 to 16 across three Bradford schools; Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College, Grange Technology College and Samuel Lister Academy.
Across two academic years, students from the schools took part in a year-long programme of workshops both in their school and at Impressions Gallery, aiming to develop their understanding of photography and how it can shape our view of the world.
At the end of each year, students worked with Bradford based multimedia artist Shanaz Gulzar to produce a collaborative artwork, exhibited at Impressions Gallery. The resulting exhibitions, This is Me (2014) and Revealed (2015), explored the identities, interests and aspirations of the young people involved in the project.
